The Grass is Greener

I am flying into California today for my History trip. (Like this one I took last year. )

I am coming from Navasota where the temperature has been in the 90s for the last few weeks...

into Los Angeles where the temperature has been 20 degrees cooler. 

I am  looking forwards to spending 2 minutes outside without sweating buckets.

Rain Rain

One of my favorite things about Texas is the summer thunderstorms. For those living in Texas, you know that we haven't had those in a while. Well, one here and there. But not enough to make me happy. Or anyone else. 

This drought has taken its toll on some stuff. 

This is the pond in Chris's parent's backyard. From the picture you can't really tell, but it is probably about 10 feet deep. 

I saw this pond early this week. It has dried up so much that the fish don't have enough room to swim. Can you see the dead fish floating?

While I don't think this drought is very cool, I do find it interesting. And it is something I can use when we talk about ecosystems in science this year. For that I am excited to draw on something the kids have experience with.

There is supposed to be a rain in about a week. But I think the weather people just say that to make people feel better. It always gets pushed back.

Everything is Bigger in Texas?

I had my first snow day as a teacher on Friday. There was snow that we were promised all week long. But I wasn't really sure if it was going to show up.

As you can see, it finally did. There was so much snow, I think all the schools in/near/around Houston were closed. At first Navasota was just going to start late, but then I got the phone call at 6:45 that school was cancelled. Which just means we get to make it up later in the year.

Seriously. This was it. There was more up North in Navasota, but not much here. But some of the freeways were closed and the overpasses and there were tons of accidents. Not because the snow/ice was that bad, but because Texans can drive through anything! Not really. I imagine that there were lots of arrogant Texans on the road who figured their truck would not be affected by the ice. 

So this was our snow day. And we didn't even get to build a snowman. But I'll live. 

And today, it got up into the 70s. That's south central Texas for you. 

Weather

Here are two weather forcasts for December 23.

While those in Utah will be having a White Christmas, I will not. Magnolia Texas will be 60 degrees, and that's cold enough for me.
